Math: Subtraction and Social Justice

The chapter on subtraction in Aunt Betsy’s math textbook suggested for today’s lesson a chart comparison using 1973 and 1963 Bureau of Labor Statistics information. I thought it was a good set of problems, but a dated chart, so I updated it. Here’s the worksheet I made, adapted from Betsy’s problems: Median Weekly Full Time Wages for Men and Women in 1998 and 2008. It asks you to compare the median weekly wages of black and white men and women across a decade. Floppy was able to read the charts with lots of prompting, and to do the subtraction problems with a little help, but he had no trouble at all figuring out that the charts told a story that was, in his words, “kind of unfair.”
